Overview of XMR and MR-guided Vascular Interventions

The fully integrated XMR system is shown here. It consists of an open interventional MRI system (0.5T GE SP). A flat panel detector is placed under the patient bed. The x-ray tube is placed in the support system so that the x-rays shoot straight downward toward the detector. The imaged volume is the same for both imaging modalities, so there is no need to move the patient when switching between the modalities.

We've used this system for several clinical studies including TIPS, trans-sphenoidal brain biopsy, and hysterosalpingogram. In all of these, the MRI provided more information than an x-ray system alone would have provided.

The system was also highlighted in Physics Today, June 2005.
